North Lanarkshire councillor bemoans car parking and congestion problem in her ward

A North Lanarkshire councillor believes that car parking and congestion is a significant issue across the area.

The SNP’s Agnes Magowan, who represents the Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig ward, described the situation as “a major problem in North Lanarkshire”.

Councillor Magowan was speaking following an intervention in a street in Wishawhill which saw emergency vehicles stuck due to the traffic congestion being so bad.

When she was approached by concerned local residents to investigate the congestion on Cairngorm Crescent, she stepped into addressing it with a new car park with 17 additional spaces being provided to try and alleviate the pressure.

She said: “The congestion was so bad that frequently the refuse lorry and emergency vehicles could not access the street.

“What a difference this has made to the free flow of traffic in Cairngorm Crescent.”

Councillor Magowan also pointed to other examples of congestion causing problems within her ward.

These include Edwards Street in Motherwell, near Knowetop Primary School.

Councillor Magowan added: “I believe it’s a North Lanarkshire-wide problem but there are various problem within our ward.

“In Edwards Street the school crossing patroller is having to take kids out into the road almost blind due to the number of cars parked.

“Cars are parked on double yellow lines and they will have to be repainted.”

In 2018, North Lanarkshire Council was given permission by the Scottish Government to employ parking attendants and operate a parking enforcement scheme.

The plans were made to encourage drivers to park correctly and safely, and ease traffic congestion, make it easier for shoppers to find short term parking spaces in towns and support local businesses by encouraging more people into town centres.
