The Learning Hub, part of the Scottish Attainment Challenge team within North Lanarkshire Council, has been presented an Excellence in Professional Learning Award from the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
The award celebrates and recognises the work by SAC Education Support Officers for Literacy and Numeracy to establish a culture of professional learning through the Hub’s coaching model.
This has had a significant impact on teachers, classroom practice and the learning of children and young people.
Councillor Kirsten Larson, convener of education, children and families, said: “This is an outstanding achievement and full credit must go to everyone involved in achieving this national award.
“It represents this authority’s clear commitment to doing the absolute best for children and young people in our schools and establishments. Well done to everyone involved.”
The coaching model, which has a focus on literacy and numeracy, promotes, supports and encourages a collaborate professional learning community across primary and secondary schools.
Feedback is gathered to ensure sustained impact in schools, staff professional knowledge and that understanding is enhanced. Most importantly, it ensures the learning of children and young people is impacted positively to close the poverty related attainment gap.
This is a key element of the ongoing work of the Scottish Attainment Challenge within North Lanarkshire.
Dr Pauline Stephen, chief executive and registrar for GTCS said: “It is vital that teachers are able to learn within a culture of professional trust and positive relationships.
“Our award recognises how teachers’ professional learning is being supported in our schools and learning communities.
“The commitment to learning throughout a teacher’s career helps ensure trust and respect in the teaching profession and positively impacts on the experiences and outcomes for learners.”
