A North Korean "trash balloon" exploded over the South Korean Presidential Office Compound in Seoul on Thursday.
The South Korean Presidential Security Service confirmed the North Korean balloon "blew up in the air and fell in the office compound early this morning."
"After a safety inspection, the service collected the fallen objects after confirming they do not contain danger or contagiousness," the service added, according to ABC News. "The service is monitoring the situation in cooperation with the Joint Chiefs of Staff."
This is the second time North Korea has sent a balloon to the South Korean Presidential Office Compound, but one of more than 5,000 that were launched between May and September of this year. The balloons are usually filled with waste, including paper and plastic bottles, and, in some cases, manure.
The latest trash balloon may be a sign of rising tensions between the neighboring countries as it comes on the heels of Kim Jong Un sending troops to Russia to fight in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. As a result, Seoul may send weapons, in addition to humanitarian aid, to Ukraine, per ABC News.
