North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has urged for enhanced war fighting capabilities against the United States and South Korea, as reported by state media. This call comes in response to ongoing military drills between South Korea and the U.S., which North Korea perceives as a rehearsal for invasion.

During a recent visit to a western operational training base, Kim emphasized the need to intensify actual war drills to rapidly enhance combat capabilities for optimal war preparedness. He stressed the importance of being ready to counter potential threats with overwhelming force.

Kim's directive follows a statement from North Korea's Defense Ministry threatening to engage in unspecified 'responsible military activities' due to the perceived aggressive nature of the South Korean-U.S. joint military exercises.

The annual computer-simulated command post training and field exercises involving 48 drills, double the number from the previous year, commenced on Monday. Both countries have reiterated that these drills are defensive in nature.

South Korea's Defense Ministry spokesperson affirmed that any provocations from North Korea would be met with an overwhelming response. He criticized North Korea's stance on the military drills, highlighting the inconsistency of labeling them as invasion rehearsals while escalating nuclear and missile threats.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been heightened by North Korea's series of missile tests since 2022, including trials of nuclear-capable missiles targeting South Korea and the U.S. With six rounds of missile tests this year, North Korea has prompted increased training exercises by the U.S. and South Korean forces.

Experts suggest that North Korea's pursuit of a larger weapons arsenal is aimed at bolstering its negotiating power in future talks with the U.S. The regime seeks significant sanctions relief while retaining its nuclear capabilities.

Anticipated further provocations and aggressive rhetoric from North Korea are expected this year, particularly as the U.S. and South Korea approach major elections, according to observers.
