North East weather hour-by-hour Met Office forecast for Sunday after snowfall overnight

There may be snow on higher ground in County Durham and Gateshead, but Newcastle itself isn't set to see any more of the white stuff for the rest of the day.

Temperatures in the North East dropped to around -3°C overnight due to a wave of bitterly cold air from the Arctic. There is a cold weather warning in place until Friday, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) encouraging people to stay warm and look out for those most at risk with freezing conditions continuing across the country.

On Sunday, households in Heaton woke up with a dusting of white on their roads and rooftops, and despite the temperature remaining above freezing for the rest of the day, the real feel temperature is set to get as low as -4°C. However, for the rest of the day the chance of precipitation is 10% or below, meaning it's set to be a dry and cold one in the city - though snow showers are expected on higher ground.

The Met Office said: "A very cold day once again for all areas. Bright for many in the south of the region but wintry showers continuing for much of Northumberland, particularly along the coast, and these spread slowly south through the day. Maximum temperature 2 °C."
