North East weather: Hour-by-hour forecast on Sunday and Monday as heavy rain set to hit region

Anyone hoping for a sunny Sunday to round off their weekend looks set to be disappointed as heavy rain has been forecast for the North East.

The Met Office has said that Sunday morning will see heavy downpours from around 9am until 11am before turning cloudy for rest of the day. However, it will still be a warm day with temperatures reaching 19°C in Newcastle.

Looking ahead to Monday, the day will get off to a wet start with heavy rain in the morning from around 7am. But the afternoon will bring a mix of sunshine and cloud with highs of 19°C.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Outbreaks of rain and showers, particularly in the west, locally heavy and thundery at times. Remaining cloudy throughout the day with the rain and showers continuing into the evening. The maximum temperature will be 22°C.

"The outlook for Monday to Wednesday will be changeable with bands of rain and showers, which will become heavy at times with a risk of thunder. Temperatures close to or just above average."
