North East sees lowest haul of King's Awards in decade with only one winner

The North East has had its lowest number of King’s Award winners for more than a decade, with just a single company securing the coveted accreditation.

Hogg Global Logistics, which is based in Hartlepool and set up in 2019, won the award for outstanding short term growth in overseas sales. The company offers services in a number of areas of international trade, including preparing documentation, sea, air and road freight services, storage, warehousing, customs clearance and all consular formalities.

But the company being the sole North East recipient of the awards - previously known as the Queen’s Awards, but taking the name of King Charles for the first time this year - will be disappointing to many in the region, after recent years saw an increase in the number of companies from the North East getting recognition. Over the previous two years, 21 companies were recognised.

Lyndsay Hogg, a director at Hogg Global Logistics, said: “As a female led organisation in a very male dominated industry we are delighted we have achieved this at Hogg Global. As a single mum to two gorgeous boys, Joel and Charlie, I have always wanted to encourage them to reach for the stars.

“We will continue to highlight the careers within a sector we are so passionate about and hope it further shines the spotlight on our hometown of Hartlepool and all the fantastic businesses it has to offer.

“We are so proud to share this news. We have worked so hard since start up to push forward and grow our business in an industry we are so passionate about. Well done team! And thank you to everyone who has supported us on this amazing journey so far.”

Nationally, a total of 148 new recipients have been announced in this year’s King’s Awards, covering areas including innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility. The awards - considered one of the most prestigious in UK business - started in 1965 and have been awarded to more than 7,000 companies over that time.

Business Minister Kevin Hollinrake said: “I congratulate the first ever recipients of The King’s Awards for Enterprise, who exemplify the talent, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of British business. I wish them every success and commend the invaluable contributions they make to communities both at home and overseas, helping to grow the UK economy.”
