The scale of the late payment crisis facing North East firms has been laid bare with figures showing that companies in the region had almost 670,000 invoices on their books that had gone past their payment deadline without being settled in February.
The figures from insolvency business R3 come alongide data which show that, at the same time, more than 38,000 regional businesses had overdue bills.
R3’s North East chair Chris Ferguson, who is head of recovery and insolvency at Gosforth-based RMT Accountants & Business Advisors, said: “Despite some progress being made in recent years, late payment of invoices remains a perennial problem and puts unnecessary strain on the finances of businesses that can stop them investing in new services, taking on new commercial opportunities, or even having enough cash in the bank to cover their day-to-day costs.
