North East butchers Dicksons sees sales jump 12% but rising costs eat into profits

North East butchers Dicksons has seen turnover jump 12% boosted by sale of its frozen pies and pastries – but rising costs have eaten into its profits.

The business acts as a supermarket supplier and wholesaler with its own chain of 31 shops, and is now the region’s largest family-owned provider of meat and food products. Based in South Shields, the firm – well known for its saveloy dips, meat pies, quiches, cooked meats and sausages – has published accounts for the year ended June 30, 2022, showing a rise in revenues from £14.4m to £16.1m.

But operating profits halved from £727,444 to £335,681 in the face of rising costs, with the firm warning of more cost pressures ahead. Despite the inflationary headwinds, Dicksons said it has worked hard not to pass on all its increases to customers. To counter energy price rises, the firm has also installed solar and other energy saving tech.
