North East business groups give cautious welcome to energy support package

Business groups have welcomed the Government’s support on energy bills but warned that more help will be needed after the initial six-month scheme.

A statement from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) revealed that the Government is working with energy suppliers to reduce charges to businesses, charities and public sector organisations to £211 per MWh for electricity and £75 per MWh for gas for six months. The proposed prices will be less than half the wholesale prices anticipated this winter.

Businesses have been eagerly awaiting details of the scheme which was trailed earlier in the month when Prime Minister Liz Truss announced help for households. Companies have not previously benefitted from any cap on energy bills, and many had warned that they would struggle to survive on current bills levels.
