North East bin collection dates for Christmas and New Year including Newcastle, Northumberland, Durham and Sunderland

As Christmas and New Year approaches, many businesses will temporarily close their doors to allow staff to spend precious time with family and friends.

And as well as many shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants who will be closing their doors on both December 25 and January 1, some bin collection services across the North East will also be affected due to normal collection dates landing on bank holidays.

As many households will accumulate more rubbish and recycling than usual over the busy Christmas period, it's worthwhile checking to see if you'll be holding onto general household waste and recycling a little longer than anticipated.

Many councils across the North East have announced changes to their usual service over the busy period, but a lucky handful of towns and cities across the region won't be affected.

Am I affected?

Newcastle City Council, Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council have announced no changes to bin collections days this year, in turn asking residents to present their green and blue bins on normal scheduled collection days.

Durham County Council says collections will take place one day later than normal starting from December 28, with normal service resuming on January 3.

Northumberland County Council also says all properties will get their bins emptied one day later than usual over the Christmas/New Year fortnight.

North Tyneside Council has announced there will be no collections on Boxing Day, with collections taking place one day up until December 30.

Gateshead Council has asked residents to refer to their bin day checker for any changes.

List of collection days -

Durham County Council

From Tuesday 27 December to Friday 30 December, collections will take place one day later than normal, starting from Wednesday 28 December to Saturday 31 December.

Normal collections will resume from Tuesday 3 January.

Meanwhile, there will be no large waste (bulky) collections between Christmas Eve and Monday 2 January.

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) across the county will be open as normal over the festive period, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Real Christmas tree collections will also be available in the New Year. Residents can book a free collection online at www.durham.gov.uk/christmastreecollections or calling 03000 260000 up to Friday 6 January.

Northumberland County Council

All properties will get their bins emptied one day later than usual over the Christmas/New Year fortnight. For example, those usually expecting the service on December 26 should instead put their bins out for collection on December 27. The last collection that will change will be January 5 being moved to January 6.

Newcastle City Council

There will be no changes to collections over the Christmas period in 2022 and New Year 2023. Collections will be on your normal day as stated on your bin calendar.

Sunderland City Council

There are no changes to bin collection days this year. Present your green or blue bin on your normal scheduled collection day(s).

Refuse teams will be operating as normal on Tuesday 27 December, which is an official bank holiday. So if your normal collection day is a Tuesday, put your bin out for collection as usual.

South Tyneside

There are no changes to bin collections dates during the Christmas holidays.

North Tyneside

There will be no collections on Boxing Day. Revised collections are:

  • December 26 - December 27
  • December 27 - December 28
  • December 28 - December 29
  • December 29 - December 30

Gateshead Council

Any changes to your collection day over the festive period will be highlighted in the bin collection day checker.
