Western parts of North Carolina are currently experiencing severe weather conditions, with heavy rains and strong winds impacting the region. Governor Roy Cooper has described the situation as one of the worst storms in modern history for parts of North Carolina.
The state is facing significant challenges, including life-threatening flash flooding, numerous landslides, and widespread power outages. As of midday Friday, there have been at least 290 road closures and over 800,000 customers without power, according to PowerOutage.us.
Tragically, there have been two storm-related deaths reported so far, and more than 100 swift water rescues have been conducted since the storm began. Governor Cooper has cautioned that additional rescues may be necessary in the days ahead as the situation unfolds.
The severe weather conditions are a result of tropical storm-force winds bordering on hurricane-strength levels. The state is mobilizing resources to address the challenges posed by the storm and ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
