My former colleague Norman Graves, who has died aged 101, was for many years professor of geography education at the Institute of Education in London, where he was an influential figure in shaping the teaching of the subject.
Much of his thinking was outlined in his two books, Geography in Education (1975), and Curriculum Planning in Geography (1979). In addition, at the institute he was involved in setting up a master’s course aimed at helping teachers to study and research new movements. In the late 1970s he also set in motion the Schools Council Geography 16-19 Project, a course of study for 16-19-year-olds in English and Welsh schools that was developed at the institute.
