Nokia is offering Londoners free Chistmas tree rental worth £100 as part of its recently launched sustainable subscription service for phones and tablets.
To nab the offer, you need to sign up to the phone maker’s Circular programme, which lets you lease a phone for a monthly fee and earn credits that can be spent on eco-friendly causes, like donations toward environmental charities. You’ll then receive your Christmas tree rental voucher worth £100 to spend at Tree2Me, which will deliver your tree and collect it after Xmas. Londoners have until December 12 to claim the deal.
The aim of Circular is to help you hold on to your phone for longer than you typically would, with Nokia recycling the device when you’re done with it or ready to upgrade. Four devices are available in the UK, with prices ranging from £10 per month for the Nokia T10 tablet to £22 per month for the Nokia X30 5G smartphone, along with a £30 set-up fee.
The scheme awards users more “seeds” the longer they keep a device, with these seeds then able to be used towards supporting sustainability or charitable efforts around the world – including planting trees or reducing carbon, backing a firm removing plastic from rivers, or providing connectivity to those in need.
Though you may associate Nokia with brick phones rather than the festive season, the offer actually makes sense when you consider the company’s history. Both Nokia and HMD Global – the company behind it – hail from Finland, where you’ll find part of Lapland. The Scandinavian country has also laid claim to Santa Claus, though historians suggest the legend of Saint Nick originated in Turkey.
HMD Global launched Nokia’s Circular service in September alongside a batch of devices including the X30 5G, described as its “most eco-friendly smartphone”. The handset has a 100 per cent recycled aluminium frame, 65 per cent recycled plastic back and comes packaged in a 94 per cent recycled paper box.
