NEW DELHI: After seven private companies were allowed to import over 90,000 tonnes of waste plastic bottles to the country for recycling, environment groups have urged the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to repeal the decision in a recent meeting.
The industries were allowed to import bottles from the US, Canada, Germany and other countries by the Union environment ministry in December 2021, which itself had banned the import of plastic waste — PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, chunks or flakes — in 2019 to promote recycling of locally generated plastic waste.
