David Warner has been ruled out of the series-opening ODI clash with India, but the Australian veteran is expected to be available for games two and three.
India won the toss and elected to bowl in Friday's ODI clash in Mumbai.
Warner returned to Australia midway through the recent four-match Test series on the subcontinent after suffering a concussion and a hairline fracture in his elbow.
The 36-year-old is back in India, but selectors are keen to give him more time to recover.
"David is coming along nicely, and a few more days of rehabilitation will be extremely beneficial," Australia's chairman of selectors George Bailey said.
"We expect him to play games two and three."
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey was a late scratching due to illness, with Josh Inglis coming in to replace him.
Spinner Ashton Agar, who didn't play in the four-Test series and returned home midway through to work on his bowling, misses out again after being named 12th man.
Glenn Maxwell will play his first international match since breaking his leg in November, while Mitch Marsh opens the batting alongside Travis Head.
Marsh is still recovering from ankle surgery and will play as a batter-only.
Nathan Ellis, who replaced the injured Jhye Richardson (hamstring) in the squad, missed out on a spot in the XI.
India are without captain Rohit Sharma, who is attending a wedding.
Hardik Pandya will captain the side in Sharma's absence.
Steve Smith is captaining Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins, who is with family back home following the death of his mother.
The three-match series looms as an important phase in Australia's preparations for this year's World Cup, also in India.
"From now until the World Cup the focus will be on building depth and combinations to a point where we want them," Bailey said.
"The aim is still to win every game, but at times it may mean people who are performing well may miss a match."
