A stray German shepherd found roaming the streets during the pandemic is spending his second Christmas in kennels. But Manchester Dogs Home are desperate to find him a new home for the new year.
Zeus arrived at Manchester Dogs’ Home in August 2021, and was ‘very scared’ when he was first rescued by the team.
The six-year-old dog has since gained confidence with some of the staff members, and has been described as ‘such a lovely boy’.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “This will be Zeus’ second Christmas with us. He is such a lovely boy and deserves a nice home - no dog should be in here two Christmases in a row.”
Little is known about Zeus’ history, with the terrified dog initially displaying his fear by barking at volunteers. But after building up trust with staff, Zeus is now partial to a belly rub and enjoys playing football.
The charity added: “The handsome Zeus came to us as a stray over 12 months ago, and for some inexplicable reason has had very little interest. Unlike his mythical namesake, when he first came to us, Zeus was very nervous and struggled with the noisy kennel environment.
“Initially he bonded with a limited number of people, and was wary of strangers, but over time as his confidence has grown, he has become a firm favourite with staff and especially the volunteer dog walkers.”
The German shepherd certainly has a ‘softer, more playful side’, but just needs time to show it. He’s known to give ‘incredible hugs’ and even loves a belly rub.
“Zeus’s character has really begun to shine through,” said Manchester Dogs’ Home. “e loves his time out of the kennels, either on his walks or playing football in the compound. He is partial to a good belly rub and gives the most incredible hugs.
“He’s very perceptive and knows just when to give you a special Zeus style hug to cheer you up.
“He absolutely loves his toys and anybody considering taking Zeus home must be willing to accommodate his fluffy purple octopus - his most loved toy - his squeaky severed ankle is optional.”
Zeus is also a cocktail sausage aficionado and will do anything for one of his favourite treats.
However, the German shepherd does have some specific needs. For example, he will need an experienced owner, ideally someone who has owned the breed previously who will have the time and patience to continue with his ongoing training and socialisation as Zeus ‘can be quite vocal when around other dogs’.
Manchester Dogs’ Home added: “He will need a pet free home and we would advise smaller humans be aged 16 and over.”
Zeus has also been diagnosed with hip dysplasia while in rescue, but the kennels say ‘this doesn’t hinder in the least his ability to enjoy life to the full’. The condition is managed by medication, any concerns can be discussed in full.
The charity commented: “Zeus can be a little shy with strangers, so it may take more than one visit for him to completely relax with you and share his fun, goofy character - you may even get a special Zeusy hug.
“This handsome fluffball has waited far too long for his special someone. If you are interested in giving a home to a loving, loyal companion, please complete an online application form.”
