There is no evidence of the hybrid Deltacron Covid variant being in the North East yet, a public health chief has confirmed.
A new strain of the virus being tracked by the UK Health Security Agency has been dubbed Deltacron as it appears to be a mix of the Delta and Omicron variants, though it is not yet known how infectious it is or how severe an illness it is likely to cause.
Lorna Smith, Newcastle’s deputy director of public health, told councillors on Thursday evening that the hybrid strain had not yet been reported in the North East’s latest virus data.
