ECHO readers have left their memories and what they miss about Southport which attracts thousands of guests each year. Following our story on Monday asking people to share their fond memories of the town that once hosted the open-air swimming pool and the Floral Hall.

Docrob commented: "The stamp shop in Wayfarers Arcade, at the far end on the ground floor. I don't collect stamps anymore, but the feeling of silence, and antiquity, in that old shop is something that brings contentment.

"Nivens, in the early 1980s, for its offbeat vibe and interior structure so different from so many bars. The Chicago Bar, was wonderfully quiet early on and the place I first became a regular at.

"The bobby shop where I bought my first Airfix kits, on Bold Street (?). Katie's Bar, my first exposure to international beers ('Suntory' and 'Michelob') even then in the very early 1980s.

"The train station at Christmas, lit by sodium lamps, peaceful, empty save for a lone ticket seller in his cabin from where came the sound of a radio, and carriages topped with crisp, hard snow. Balfour Road, lit too with sodium lamps, its grand old houses hued amber and framed by falling snowflakes.

"The snack shop on Hague Ave, with the gorgeous vendor with the two big Afghan Hounds. Safe, peaceful, pretty. That was Southport to me."

Standardblogpaper said: "I miss being able to have a walk around the fairground, maybe have an ice cream or hotdog without having to pay an entrance fee."
