Nivea Kids suncream 'warning' after mum spots 'new added ingredient'

A concerned mum has warned shoppers of a new added ingredient to Nivea's sunscreen for kids.

As the weather is warming up and after Scotland enjoyed a number of sunny days, parents will be slathering on sunscreen all over their kids to protect them from harmful UV rays.

However, one mum has warned shoppers that Nivea has now added an ingredient that could potentially be dangerous to some people.

Almond oil is now noted as an ingredient on the suncream as it was added this year.

Posting on Facebook, the mum wrote: "For anyone that has a child with a nut allergy like myself, Nivea has now put almond oil into their sunscreen. I for one will never be buying this again."

Nivea has said that the almond oil has been refined in a way that there is no known food allergic potential.

Almonds aren't technically a nut but are classified as “drupes", which are fruits have a fleshy on the outside and contain a shell covering a seed on the inside.

But according to FoodAllergy.org: "The six tree nut allergies most commonly reported by children and adults are allergies to walnut, almond, hazelnut, pecan, cashew and pistachio."

The post quickly accumulated 1.8k comments with some saying that the bottles they have already, don't have the new addition. But they add that they will be checking closely in the future.

Abigail warned: "Thank you so much for sharing, I usually check everything as it happened to me with Tresemme shampoo once. So dangerous, they should label change of ingredients. It’s not just what you eat."

Carrie added: "I just got a bottle this morning from the local chemist before reading this. I just checked the ingredients and it doesn't have it in, guess I just got lucky."

But another issued a warning pointing out that almond oil could be listed as another name.

Charlotte replied: "It’s often listed in cosmetics/toiletries under the Latin name. Almond oil is Prunus dulcis."

A spokesperson from Nivea said: "As the World’s No.1 Sun Protection Brand, we’re always looking at how we can further improve our formulas to provide the best products for our consumers. This year we have improved the NIVEA SUN Kids Protect & Care range by adding almond oil. Almond oil is used in a wide range of formulas for babies and children, as it makes skin soft to touch and protects it from moisture loss.

"The highest standards regarding toxicological testing and the quality of our ingredients and products are essential for Beiersdorf. Please be assured that all ingredients used in our products have been thoroughly evaluated regarding safety and skin compatibility according to the current EU legislation for cosmetics. Furthermore, the almond oil used in our products, including NIVEA SUN Kids Protect & Care, is refined in a way that there is no known food allergic potential.

"Those who have concerns with regards to food and/or skin related almond allergies should seek the advice of their GP before using any product that contains almond oil.

"If in doubt, our NIVEA SUN Babies & Kids Sensitive Protect range may be a more suitable alternative, as it does not contain almond oil."
