Nine dead, 13 injured as speeding car ploughs into crowd in Ahmedabad

In a horrific incident, nine people were killed and over a dozen grievously injured when a speeding luxury car mowed down a crowd gathered at an accident site in Ahmedabad’s SG highway flyover On July 20, 2023. 

A policeman and a home guard jawan were among those killed when the car running at 150kmph speed ploughed into the crowd on the flyover at around 1 am past midnight.

The Police have arrested Tathya Patel, son of a local builder Pragnesh Patel, who was driving the luxury car at an extremely high speed.

As per the details, a Thar SUV and a truck had collided over the flyover and a police constable and a home guard jawan rushed to the spot to manage the traffic. A crowd had also gathered at the site. 

“When they were on the bridge, a speeding Jaguar car rammed into the crowd, killing five persons on the spot, while four persons died during treatment,” said Satellite Police Inspector KY Vyas. 

According to Police, most of the deceased and injured people were from other places and were living in Ahmedabad as paying guests. 

The flyover is at ISKCON crossroads is a popular hangout spot for youngsters during night hours as there are several eateries and tea stalls. 

When they learnt about the collision between a Thar and a truck; they went on the bridge out of curiosity, and minutes later, the speeding car came from the Karnavati Club side and mowed down the crowd. 

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced compensation for the families of the deceased and injured while the Health Minister Rushikesh Patel visited Sola Civil Hospital to meet the relatives and families of the victims.
