NEW DELHI: After living under MC Mary Kom's shadow for long, Nikhat Zareen (52kg) announced her arrival on the big stage of women's boxing when she assured herself of a medal at the World Championships in Turkey's Istanbul, following a dominating 5-0 win over her English rival, Charley-Sian Taylor Davison.
The Telangana boxer's quarterfinal triumph also secured India its first medal at the ongoing Worlds, which has seen the participation of 310 boxers from 73 countries. Nikhat, who has assured herself of at least a bronze, will now take on Brazil's Caroline De Almeida in the semifinals on Wednesday. De Almeida defeated 2018 Gold Coast CWG silver medallist, Ireland's Carly McNaul, by unanimous decision.
