'Night to remember' coming to city's museum with 90s boyband nostalgia

A queer "night to remember" is coming to the city’s museum at the beginning of next month.

National Museums Liverpool (NML) has teamed up with Homotopia, the UK’s longest-running LGBTQ+ arts and culture festival to host a series of events which will “take over its venues and spaces like never before outside daytime opening hours.”

The latest project, titled NML Xtra, will both reimagine their venues and invite visitors to explore collections in new and creative ways. The first in the series, and for one night only, is Homotopia’s Queer the City project, an evening dedicated to showcasing some of the region's most exciting LGBTQ+ artists all under one roof whilst they “bring the museum to life with experiences, encounters and installations embedded in around the galleries.” The NML said it will be a "night to remember."

With more to be announced, the line-up consists of Ghetto fabulous presenting the “thrilling catwalk extravaganza” which will see dancers go head-to-head in a dance, fashion and lip-sync competition with the audience deciding the winner. Also making an appearance is Spice Boys, Walter Ego, Ryan and Uncle Martin who will “drag up your life and serve you 90s/00s boyband nostalgia and dance moves.”

A night-long immersive reimagining of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway will also be performed by BBC Young Dancer finalist Matthew Rawcliffe. Rounding off the list is live music from singer-songwriter, Iamkyami, who is known for their neo-soul, RnB hip hop sound.

Homotopia Festival director, Char Binns, added: “Homotopia has been working with the most exciting LGBTQIA creative talent from Liverpool and beyond for nearly 20-years and we’re experts at presenting great live art and performance during our annual festival every November. The event will offer the same electric atmosphere that usually builds over two weeks during our festival but is condensed into just one night.

The evening is just one of the first in a series of late-night events at National Museums Liverpool venues. The second, held at the same venue, is later in the year for the city’s River of Light, while the third will be a romantic night at Walker Art Gallery next February.

Queer the City takes place on Saturday, July 2, at the Museum of Liverpool from 7pm till late. Tickets are priced at £20 for adults and £14 for young people between the age of 16 and 17 and can be bought online.

David Watson, the director of audiences and media at NML, added: “We’re thrilled to be working with Homotopia for our first Xtra, a series of events where we see our venues welcoming audiences in the evenings. The team at Homotopia are curating a very special evening, bringing together powerful interventions that range from the loud and proud to the emotional and thought-provoking. It is the perfect cocktail for curious minds, culture lovers and anyone with a passion for self-expression in what promises to be an unforgettable evening.”
