Nigeria have secured their progress through to the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare. The Super Eagles followed Egypt in booking a knockout berth at the latest AFCON tournament after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Group C rivals Tunisia in Fez that followed a nervy 2-1 win against Tanzania earlier in the week.
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria a deserved lead in Saturday night’s high-profile clash, heading in Ademola Lookman’s cross after missing a massive early chance and also having another goal ruled out for offside. Captain Wilfred Ndidi headed home his first senior international goal from Lookman’s corner shortly after half-time to double the advantage, while Eric Chelle’s side made it 3-0 after Lookman himself finished off a flowing passing move by crashing in off the post.
The Super Eagles looked to be easing through to the knockout stages with a flourish, though had to survive a grandstand finish after Montassar Talbi’s header from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick and Ali Abdi’s emphatic penalty awarded after a handball decision against Bright Osayi-Samuel sparked a dramatic late Tunisia fightback. Nigeria are through to the last 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare, but they have plenty to work on after almost blowing a three-goal lead in embarrassing fashion late on.
They finish their Group C campaign against Uganda at the same ground on Tuesday afternoon.
A gutting result for Tunisia, but that spirited fightback will give them heart and they will still be confident of reaching the knockout stages as they prepare to meet Tanzania in Rabat.

It got a touch off Dahmen on the way through, but he wasn’t keeping that out.

Nigeria 1-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:55 , George FloodAfter a huge early miss and yet another disallowed goal, Victor Osimhen is finally on target again at AFCON to give the Super Eagles a half-time lead in this crunch clash in Group C.
It’s only his second-ever goal at this tournament and first since the opening game in Ivory Coast last time around.
He’s now up to five disallowed.
Nigeria are on course to seal their last-16 spot as things stand.

The mask comes off during some passionate celebrations.

Saturday 27 December 2025 20:29 , George FloodBy the way, if anyone’s counting, that is now five goals that Victor Osimhen has had disallowed at the Africa Cup of Nations during his career.
A remarkable stat.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:27 , George Flood25 mins: Nigeria’s latest free-kick delivery is disappointing, but they quickly come again.

Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:23 , George Flood19 mins: Fine defending from Valery to stop Osimhen from producing another header inside the box.
Tunisia have no out ball whatsoever at the moment.
It’s total dominance from the Super Eagles.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:20 , George Flood17 mins: Osimhen taps home from close range after Adams’ low drive is palmed away by Tunisia goalkeeper Dahmen.
But the offside flag once again denies the Super Eagles’ star striker, as it did against Tanzania on Tuesday night.
The decision stands after a quick VAR check. What does Osimhen have to do to score at AFCON?!
0-0 it remains, but an opening Nigeria goal feels like a certainty at the moment.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:18 , George Flood16 mins: A vital clearance from Yan Valery stops Onyeka’s driven low effort from reaching Osimhen at the back post.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:16 , George Flood15 mins: Certainly not for the first time at this tournament in Morocco, the rain is now pouring down.
It’s still all Nigeria, though Adams and Osimhen aren’t on the same wavelength on this occasion and another attack peters out.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:14 , George Flood12 mins: A Tunisian defender goes down after Onyeka hurls a long throw into the box from the near side.
Play goes on and the Carthage Eagles try to counter.
But Nigeria win the ball back quickly and look to threaten again down the left through Iwobi, who is held in check.
Nigeria 0-0 Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 20:12 , George Flood10 mins: Nigeria are piling on massive pressure now as another searching cross just evades Osimhen before Osayi-Samuel’s strike is deflected behind for a corner.

Underway in Fez!
Players are out
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:58 , George FloodThe players are out at the Fez Stadium and the national anthems have been sung.
We will be underway very shortly.
Kick-off approaching
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:54 , George FloodFinal preparations in Fez, where the atmosphere is building ahead of kick-off.

Tunisia changing system?
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:46 , George FloodIt will be interesting to see the Tunisian system with a midfielder replacing a winger.
Some places seem to think it will be star man Mejbri playing further forward alongside Achouri and Mastouri in the same 4-3-3 formation.
But you wonder if Sami Trabelsi is looking for a bit more protection than that in the middle against far tougher opponents.
Nigeria sticking with diamond?
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:41 , George FloodSo presumably then that’s a continuation of the familiar 4-4-2 diamond system from Nigeria, with captain Ndidi at the base, Lookman at the top and Onyeka partnering Iwobi.
I guess it could also easily morph into a 4-3-3, with a midfield trio of Ndidi, Onyeka and Iwobi behind Lookman, Adams and Osimhen.
The inclusion of Sevilla striker Adams though and no Chukwueze should surely mean it’s two up top.

Ben Romdhane replaces Saad for Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:24 , George FloodDespite those pre-match comments about not tinkering with a winning team, Tunisia head coach Sami Trabelsi has made one change to the team that beat Uganda 3-1.
Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane is drafted into midfield as winger Elias Saad drops to the bench.
A more advanced role presumably in store then for Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri, alongside Elias Achouri and Hazem Mastouri, who is fit to start after his half-time substitution in the opener.

Tunisia lineup
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:20 , George FloodTunisia XI: Dahmen, Valery, Bronn, Talbi, Abdi, Sassi, Skhiri, Ben Romdhane, Mejbri, Achouri, Mastouri
Two Nigeria changes from opener
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:13 , George FloodSo Eric Chelle makes two changes to the Nigeria team that started against Tanzania on Tuesday night.
Bruno Onyemaechi replaces Zaidu Sanusi at left-back, while Brentford’s Frank Onyeka comes into midfield as Fulham winger Samuel Chukwueze drops out.
Akor Adams continues alongside Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in attack.

Nigeria lineup
Saturday 27 December 2025 19:05 , George FloodNigeria XI: Nwabali, Osayi-Samuel, Bassey, Ajayi, Onyemaechi, Onyeka, Ndidi, Iwobi, Lookman, Adams, Osimhen
Milestone for Msuva
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:58 , George FloodMake that 1-0 to Tanzania after a penalty dispatched by Simon Msuva, who reached a century of international appearances as he returned to the squad against Nigeria on Tuesday.
The Iraq-based forward has now drawn level with Mrisho Ngassa as the Taifa Stars’ all-time top goalscorer with his 25th international strike.
Not a bad celebration, either...

What else has happened at AFCON today?
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:51 , George FloodWhat has happened so far on another busy day at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations?
It opened with Benin bouncing back from their opening defeat by DR Congo in Group D, with defender Yohan Roche on target in a 1-0 win over Botswana in Rabat - a first-ever victory at the AFCON finals for a team that pushed South Africa and Nigeria so hard in World Cup qualifying.
Later in Tangier, Sadio Mane’s goal ensured a share of the spoils for Senegal against DR Congo after an opening effort from Cedric Bakambu.
That kept 2021 champions Senegal top of the group ahead of DR Congo on goal difference, though they could face a tough test in their final group fixture against Benin on Tuesday night.
Botswana are heading home after successive losses, which is hardly a surprise given what a tricky group they faced.
It is currently goalless between Group D rivals Uganda and Tanzania in Rabat, with an hour played.

Conflicting World Cup fortunes for Nigeria and Tunisia
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:41 , George FloodWhereas Nigeria suffered a heartbreaking play-off defeat on penalties by DR Congo to miss out on the World Cup finals - pending their official complaint to FIFA - for the second time in a row, Tunisia did book their spot in North America next summer with ease.
They won nine and lost none of their 10 qualifiers to storm to the top of a weak group where their closest rivals were Namibia, Liberia and Malawi, not conceding a single goal as they made it three World Cup appearances in succession.
But Tunisia boss Sami Trabelsi does not believe the two nations’ contrasting World Cup qualification fortunes will have any impact on tonight’s game.
“Our qualification for the World Cup and Nigeria’s failure to qualify gives us no advantage,” he said yesterday.
“We don’t deal with assumptions. We deal with seriousness and focus in every match and against every opponent.
“The most important thing is to maintain focus and discipline on the pitch and to build on the winning spirit within the team.
“The journey in this competition is still long. We must move step by step without thinking too far ahead.”
Trabelsi also confirmed that he would not be making any changes to the Tunisia team that eased past Uganda on Tuesday.
“All players are in good health and ready,” he said. “We don’t change a winning team.”

Nigeria out for revenge after 2022 AFCON exit
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:25 , George FloodNigeria will be desperate to avoid a repeat of what happened in their last Africa Cup of Nations meeting with Tunisia.
It was back in Cameroon in January 2022, when a depleted Tunisian team missing seven players and coach Mondher Kebaier isolating due to Covid-19 stunned 10-man Nigeria 1-0 in the last 16 to seal a quarter-final spot.
Captain Youssef Msakni was on target with a long-range effort for the Carthage Eagles, while Alex Iwobi was sent off for Nigeria in Garoua shortly after being introduced off the bench.
Iwobi was hugely influential for the Super Eagles against Tanzania on Tuesday, setting up both goals in a man-of-the-match display.
Tunisia went on to lose 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the last eight in Cameroon.

Chelle hints at tactical change for Nigeria
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:16 , George FloodHere are Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle’s thoughts on a possible tactical switch for the Super Eagles tonight...
“In my mind I have two options,” he said.
“The first is maybe to let Tunisia have the ball or when we get the ball back we go direct or we continue with our philosophy.
“As we know Tunisia is a good team and maybe we will change something.
“We had our training sessions after the first game and in the sessions we tried to add more intensity.
“We have a game against a great team so let’s go for this game.
“I have to prepare my players well as it’s not going to be easy.
“Tunisia is a great team like I said, they have a lot of good players with experience, lots of young players so they play well as a team.”

Nigeria vs Tunisia prediction
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:08 , George FloodNigeria flattered to deceive for much of a nervier-than-expected win over Tanzania on Tuesday and should face a far tougher test against Tunisia.
If they are to seal their spot in the AFCON last 16 at the earliest opportunity, they will need Victor Osimhen firing on all cylinders, as well as the array of Premier League stars behind him.
After cruising through their warm-up fixtures, now is the time to step up the tempo.
Expect it to be a tight match, but Nigeria’s firepower should see them through.
Nigeria to win, 2-1.

Tunisia team news
Saturday 27 December 2025 18:03 , George FloodTunisia also appeared to come through their AFCON opener largely unscathed - a comfortable 3-1 win over Uganda at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Striker Hazem Mastouri is expected to be fit after being replaced by Firas Chaouat at half-time of that first game.
Mastouri took a number of painful blows in the first half against Uganda and was withdrawn by head coach Sami Trabelsi as a precaution.
He underwent tests and no injuries were discovered, so he is in contention this evening.

Nigeria team news
Saturday 27 December 2025 17:54 , George FloodNigeria are not believed to have any fresh injury concerns ahead of tonight’s game, though head coach Eric Chelle may be pondering changes after a nervy 2-1 opening win over Tanzania in Group C on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles switched from their usual 4-4-2 diamond system to a 4-3-3 in the second half of that game and it remains to be seen if they will deploy a change in formation from the off back in Fez.
Moses Simon made a big impact off the bench against Tanzania after Samuel Chukwueze was withdrawn, while Fisayo Dele-Bashiru also did well after replacing Akor Adams.
Defenders Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick are both missing the AFCON due to injury, while Maduka Okoye, Tolu Arokodare and Terem Moffi were among the most high-profile omissions from Chelle’s 28-man tournament squad.
Victor Osimhen will be expected to lead the attack as usual, having been largely frustrated against Tanzania and seen a second-half goal ruled out for offside.
Wilfred Ndidi now captains Nigeria following the international retirement of ex-skipper William Troost-Ekong earlier this month.
