Nigel Pearson sends challenge to Bristol City fringe players ahead of hectic fixture schedule

Nigel Pearson has called on Bristol City's fringe players to grasp their opportunity with both hands ahead of a relentless run of fixtures until the World Cup.

The Robins have eight games in October and a further four at the beginning of November before a three-week break following a home clash against Watford on November 12.

It will prove a testing but crucial period for City and a fixture list that provides a welcome challenge to progress up the table with five of their next eight matches being hosted at Ashton Gate. However, Pearson will need to manage minutes carefully as he deals with a relatively small squad of players.

Fortunately, City haven't had to deal with any major injuries that have happened during the season. Matty James is the only notable name to miss a few weeks of action with a calf injury while Timm Klose missed a game with a knee problem.

Mark Sykes was also sidelined for three matches following his red card against Luton. Tomas Kalas and Ayman Benarous have remained long-term absentees with the former closing in on a return to action in "October or November".

Kalas hasn't played since March following a groin issue before struggling with an ongoing knee problem while Benarous is recovering from an ACL injury and should be back among contention towards the end of the year.

Rotation is likely to be a necessity over the next six weeks of action and that means opportunities are likely to arise for those who have struggled for minutes this season. Right wing-back Kane Wilson has managed just three substitute appearances in the league so far and has failed to make the squad in the last two matches.

He has started both of City's Carabao Cup matches and featured in one Under-21s contest to help maintain his match fitness.

Han-Noah Massengo, Chris Martin, Timm Klose, Cam Pring and Andy King are among those who have also seen limited game time but Pearson has tasked them with giving him a selection headache when they get their chance.

Midfielder Alex Scott is one booking away from picking up his fifth yellow card of the season and thus faces a one-game suspension as Pearson told Robins TV: "The most important thing is the players have the ability to manage themselves. We believe more in educating players than being dictatorial in what we do.

"It's about trying to develop a culture in which the players understand the reason of why we do things and also that they feel the benefits from that. There are going to be lots of changes during these 12 games so we're able to have for the most part relatively settled sides but there will be injuries and there will be suspensions and we'll have to deal with that.

"What's really important is that players who maybe have not had opportunities or not had too many opportunities will take them when they come because that's what we'll need.

"One of the things that we've talked about quite a lot is the fact that it's important that we get our performances close to our maximum every time. We've proved that we can compete with some of the better sides and even if the result haven't gone the way we want we feel we've had strong chances to win games in every game.

"So that's a real positive but the danger with that is people then assume you can just win other games and it's not like that. The Championship is full of teams who will feel on their day they are capable of beating anyone."
