Fans hoped for a new NieR game reveal after one of series creator Yoko Taro’s characteristically quirky teases seemed to hide a special announcement for the RPG series. It turns out they were only partly right, as the reveal was an announcement that NieR Automata sales have passed the 7 million mark.
The news comes a month after Square Enix released the cult-classic action RPG on Nintendo Switch, making it available on every modern platform five years after it first launched. Square Enix last reported that NieR Automata had sold 6 million copies in 2021.
Yoko Taro and Square Enix also announced that sales for the recent NieR Replicant remaster, which released in April 2021, have already passed 1 million. As yet, there are no plans for a Switch port of Replicant, however.
As for what’s next in the NieR series, Square Enix and Aniplex are still working on a NieR Automata anime series set to air in January 2023. The anime is a retelling, instead of a faithful adaptation. Series creator Yoko Taro said it will diverge from Automata’s story in several ways throughout.
Yoko Taro previously said the series is over, though with his track record of trolling fans, unexpected announcements, and off-the-cuff comments, most fans think that means a new NieR game is likely already in the works.
