Nicola Sturgeon's hilarious response to Andy Murray and Gary Tank Commander's First Minister bids

Nicola Sturgeon has shared a few potential suitors that have shown interest in taking over her role as First Minister of Scotland - and it's definitely not who you would think.

Yesterday the First Minister held a press conference at Bute House in Edinburgh where she announced that she plans to leave the job she has held since 2014.

And since then many have been pondering over who will take her place - but on social media the offers have been flying in.

One candidate even made a video appeal on why he should take Sturgeon's place and it was no other than.... here's a clue..."It's Me... Garrrrry!"

Gary: Tank Commander - the much loved spoof BBC character portrayed by Greg McHugh - spoke to the camera to say why he should be next in line for the very important role.

Gary said he would make a great First Minister (Twitter/GaryTank)

He said: "My name is Gary, I'm a tank commander I work for a company called the army and the reason I think should be the first minister is that I honestly believe that I'm amazing and that ken that way it's just like - that is who you need!

"Someone who is genuinely amazing that walks into a room and folk are like 'who is that?' and they are like... 'that's Gary!' he's amazing.

"And I think, if you've got that - which I huv - ye kin just learn the rest eh!? cause that's what it's aboot it's aboot when you walk into the room and George Biden stands up and aw frail and that and he's like - 'Who is that guy? He looks amazing! Aw, that's Gary - he's the First Minister of Scoatland!'"

He added: "And that's just one example of what a kin dae! And I widny put up wae anything fae like doon south or that eh, like aw they muppets, I would walk in and just be like: 'Shut up'. Shut it - listen to Gary.

"So that's another example and I watched The Apprentice last week so aye, pretty much I think it should be mine so thanks very much for listening and remember, vote Gary for an amazing Scotland."

And Nicola Sturgeon noticed Gary's tweet and shared her thoughts. She wrote: "First @andy_murray and now @GARYTANK - my decision not to endorse a successor is coming under strain…"

Last night Scots tennis star Andy Murray also said he would be up for taking on the vacancy when the time comes to retire from tennis.

Sharing an article announcing the news of her resignation, Andy tweeted: "Interesting vacancy. Was looking to get into politics when I finish playing."

And Sturgeon replied to Andy's tweet, saying: "I know I said I wouldn't endorse my successor, but..."

Many Scots celebs flocked to social media to pay tribute to Nicola Sturgeon for her service to the country over the last eight years.

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly wrote: "Thanks @nicolasturgeon for all the interviews over the years. A politician but also a human being. No matter your views on independence she was a force to be reckoned with. Big shoes to fill. #scotland #womeninpolitics."

And Greenock born actor Martin Compston penned: "By far the most capable politician in the UK of the last decade. Ran rings round umpteen opposition leaders and prime ministers, @NicolaSturgeon leaves independence movement in a far stronger position than when she took over and deserved to go out on her terms. Be sorely missed."

While comedian Janey Godley joked: "Frank is getting the door for Nicola for the last time today, hope you have a good time down at the caravan - you’ve earned the rest."
