Nicola Sturgeon lifts measures on pubs as nightclubs in Scotland to reopen next week

Nicola Sturgeon has announced all covid restrictions implemented around the festive period on pubs and restaurants will be lifted next week.

The First Minister revealed that due to the slowing down of Omicron cases there could be a lifting of restrictions across the country.

During an announcement to the Scottish Parliament Sturgeon announced that nightclubs, which have been closed for a number of weeks, can reopen as usual from Monday, January 24.

The decision by the Scottish Government will be a boost to businesses up and down the country who have struggled since measures were brought in.

Sturgeon told MSPs: "Yesterday the limit on attendances at outdoor public events was lifted.

"The remaining statutory measures introduced in response to Omicron are as follows; limits on attendance at indoor public events; the requirement for 1 metre physical distancing between different groups in indoor public places; the requirement for table service in hospitality premises serving alcohol on the premises; and the closure of nightclubs.

"Given the improving situation - and as I said last week we hoped to be able to do - I can confirm today that all of these measures will be lifted from next Monday, 24 January."

During her statement Sturgeon also announce a small change to the covid passport scheme in nightclubs.

She said: "At the moment, nightclubs and other late night venues must apply the Covid certification scheme if they have, in use, a designated area for dancing.

"We intend to amend the definition here to provide greater clarity and prevent premises from avoiding certification simply by having tables on a dance floor - and therefore claiming it is not a dance floor - but still permitting dancing around the tables.

"This change will take effect from Monday when late night venues are able to reopen."
