Nicola Coughlan 'heartbroken' to miss world premiere of the second series of Bridgerton after being struck down by Covid-19

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan missed the world premiere of the second series of the hit show after testing positive for Covid-19.

The 35-year-old shared the news on Instagram ahead of the show's season 2 red carpet premiere, captioning a photo of herself, "My Bridgerton Premiere look- a little different than expected."

The Galway native said she was “heartbroken” she missed out on the night.

The Derry Girls star said: "So I've been struck down with Miss Rona and I'm missing our first premiere- heartbroken is an understatement but sending so much love to my gorgeous cast mates who I hope have the best night.”

Coughlan, who plays fan-favorite Penelope Featherton on the show, donned a spa-chic outfit consisting of a white towel wrapped around her head and a white robe.

She glammed up in honour of the premiere, sporting crimson red lips, metallic eyeshadow, and a stunning silver statement necklace, calling it her "infectious virus but make it fashion" look.

"We'll miss you so much my lovely," fellow cast member Charithra Chandran commented, while Queer Eye sensation Jonathan Van Ness added, "But you look f–ing hot tho."

It comes just days after Nicola appeared on the BBC One show, where she said she ruined the ending of season one for her friends and family.

Host Lauren Laverne began by telling Nicola Bridgerton "has got it all" before discussing her character Penelope's huge reveal at the end of the first series.

"So your character was unmasked at the end of the last series as the mysterious Lady Whistedown," Lauren said.

"It must have been hard to keep it a secret."

Nicola smiled at the hosts and quipped: "Well the good thing is that I didn't.

"I just told all my friends and family and they were all fuming with me and they said it really ruined the ending.

"But I mean if you are sharing a role with Julie Andrews that's quite hard to keep that, but I have been much better this series and not telling them stuff.

"So they have seen a little bit and they are like, 'Ah', and I was like, 'I know, wasn't I good by not telling you?'"
