Nicola Adams’s partner Ella Baig revealed the couple had to change doctors during their IVF journey after learning she had several “underlying health conditions.”
The couple previously shared that it took three rounds of treatment before Braig finally fell pregnant with their son Taylor.
Now reflecting on their journey, the 23-year-old admitted that “several things went wrong that shouldn’t have,” during the process as she discussed their upcoming IVF documentary.
In the doc, the couple explore the emotional and financial cost of this fertility treatment by meeting others who have been through the same process, including a same-sex couple who struggled to get funding after learning they’d be treated different to a heterosexual couple.
Speaking on Thursday’s This Morning alongside Adams, Braig said of their IVF experience: “The first two cycles were fully medicated, and it turned out I didn’t need any medication, so there were a lot of issues going into it with IVF, you just take the doctor’s word for everything.
“It wasn’t until we re-evaluated everything and went to a different doctor and I found out I had an underlying health condition.
“There were quite a lot of things that went wrong that shouldn’t have, and that’s why I wanted to do the documentary, so people go into IVF knowing all the facts and safer.”
Braig added that multiple rounds of IVF, and the medication required, took a toll on her body, and as she and Nicola went into the third round, she said they would have to take a break if they were unsuccessful.
Chatting to hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, she shared: “I definitely, after the second time, when I wanted to try again, I said if it doesn’t work this time, I need a break, it’s really emotionally challenged.
“You don’t know whether to switch off your emotions and just try to ride through it. It’s meant to be a nice experience, it’s meant to be happy. It can be really really hard.
“It’s not private between the two of you, there’s appointments, doctors and people around you, and so you kind of get a chance to sit down and think about your feelings and emotions.”
In July, the couple announced their baby joy on Instagram after previously revealing it took multiple rounds of IVF to get pregnant.
