Nick Cave slams stars snubbing King Charles' coronation invite - but denies he's a royalist

Nick Cave has been forced to deny claims that he is a royalist or a monarchist after he agreed to perform at the King's Coronation ceremony this weekend.

The 65-year-old rocker will be in attendance to celebrate when the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II will be crowned King of the United Kingdom on Saturday.

Among the high-profile guests expected to attend the historic event include Australian singer Cave, who has justified his appearance by saying he holds 'an inexplicable emotional attachment to the Royals'.

In the most recent edition of his self-published Red Hand Files newsletter, where he answers questions from fans, the rocker was bombarded with many negative comments which questioned his support of the monarchy by joining the Coronation celebrations.

“Why the f*** are you going to the King’s coronation?” one unimpressed fan asked.

In response, the singer hit back with a lengthy post as to why he is set to perform at the historic event.

“I am not a monarchist, nor am I a royalist, nor am I an ardent republican for that matter; what I am also not is so spectacularly incurious about the world and the way it works, so ideologically captured, so damn grouchy, as to refuse an invitation to what will more than likely be the most important historical event in the UK of your age," he penned.

"Not just the most important, but the strangest, the weirdest.

“I guess what I am trying to say is that, beyond the interminable but necessary debates about the abolition of the monarchy, I hold an inexplicable emotional attachment to the Royals – the strangeness of them, the deeply eccentric nature of the whole affair that so perfectly reflects the unique weirdness of Britain itself.”

The singer concluded: "I’m just drawn to that kind of thing – the bizarre, the uncanny, the stupefyingly spectacular, the awe-inspiring.”

Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are also among the A-listers who will be performing for the newly-crowned King at the Coronation concert.

The show will also feature performances by Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, Take That, Freya Ridings, and Alexis Ffrench.
