Nick Cave and son Jethro: From 'eternal regret' over absence to 'great' relationship

Model Jethro Lazenby, the son of legendary singer Nick Cave has died aged 31, it has been announced today.

Jethro was the oldest of Nick's four sons, including Arthur, who died seven years ago aged 15, after falling from a cliff.

The 31-year-old lived in Melbourne and was released from prison two days before his death, it has been reported.

He was jailed in April after pleading guilty to violently assaulting his mother, model Beau Lazenby.

His lawyer had announced that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, it has been reported.

Jethro, who has worked for big names such as Balenciaga and Versace, grew up with his mum in Australia.

Nick's second son Luke was born just ten days after Jethro, to Nick's first wife, Viviane Carneiro.

Nick and Viviane divorced in 1996 and the musician went on to marry model and later fashion designer Susie Bick, with who he had twins Arthur and Earl.

It appears that Nick and Jethro's early relationship was tricky.

In a 2012 interview with the Evening Standard, Jethro said he didn't meet his dad until he was about seven or eight, although he knew who he was.

"I haven't had the easiest life," he told the paper, adding: "It didn't start off that great, having all this shit with my dad and being in his shadow."

In 2008, Nick addressed the situation, telling a journalist: “It was a difficult time, but it turned out great in the end."

He went on: "To my eternal regret, I didn’t make much contact with Jethro in the early years, but I now have a great relationship with him.”

In a statement today, Nick said: "With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away.

"We would be grateful for family privacy at this time."

The last decade has seen Nick's life marked by tragedy, after Arthur fell from a cliff in Brighton after experimenting with LSD.

The schoolboy, whose twin Earl marked his 20th birthday two years ago, was found lying unconscious on a coastal path below the steep ledge by passers-by who tried to carry out first aid.

Arthur, who devastated pals said was "always happy and smiling", was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital.

The family described Arthur as a "beautiful, happy loving boy" at the time of his death.

Later Cave and his band The Bad Seeds released Ghosteen, a potent exploration of grief written following Arthur's death.

In one heart-wrenching post written in 2018 on his website The Red Hand Files, Nick spoke about how he and his wife still feel their son's presence.

Nick wrote: "I feel the presence of my son, all around, but he may not be there.

"I hear him talk to me, parent me, guide me, though he may not be there.

"He visits Susie in her sleep regularly, speaks to her, comforts her, but he may not be there."
