NIAMH FAHEY has admitted to invoking the spirit of the late great Diego Maradona in last night’s 9-0 trouncing of Georgia.
The centre-half scored the first goal of her 104-cap Ireland career - and replays showed that the ball last touched her hand before going into the net.
“It was a small bit of a Maradona, hand of God in there,” said the Galway native.

“I can’t even remember it, to be honest. It just went slightly ahead of me, so I think it was maybe head to hand, or, I’m not sure.
“It was hand anyway, but the ref didn’t give it and Amber Barrett just jumped in my face. So I thought, it must count!”
Last night’s win moved Ireland into the play-off spot ahead of September’s final two matches at home to Finland and away to Slovakia.
A win over the Finns would secure second place, while a draw could also be enough.
But Fahey insisted: “We are trying to finish as strong as possible in the group, because obviously if we finish high up that’s good for the play-off stages and we might skip a round in the play-offs.
“We want to win every game now. We have two massive games coming in September, so hopefully we can do that.”
