NIA court allows ED to question Surendra Gadgil, record statement in jail

MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently registered a money laundering case against lawyer Surendra Gadgil, arrested in the Elgar Parishad case. On Wednesday the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court allowed the ED's plea to question Gadgil and record his statement in jail. "Whether there exists proceeds of crime, is part of the investigation of the authority. Since ECIR (case) is registered, his statement can be taken," the court said.

Special public prosecutor Sunil Gonsalves submitted that during the investigation conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, it was revealed that Gadling was instrumental in raising funds and committing acts that were in furtherance of the activities of the banned CPI (Maoist).

Arguing in person, Gadling opposed the ED plea. "If you peruse the entire chargesheet of (around) 40,000 pages nowhere does it say that proceeds of crime was recovered from me...In February 2018 my house was raided. Not one single uncounted rupee was found," Gadling submitted.
