NI goalkeeper hailed for making ‘as good a save as you’ll see’ in Shrimps survival bid

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Trevor Carson has been hailed for making ‘as good a save as you’ll see’ in Morecambe’s crucial 2-1 win over promotion chasing Oxford United.

With time running out the 34-year-old dived to his left to produce a stunning parry to deny Sam Winnall a 91st minute equaliser at the Mazuma Stadium.

Carson’s heroics helped propel the Shrimps out of the relegation dropzone, a point clear of Gillingham who dropped into the bottom four.

Morecambe boss Derek Adams said: “Trevor Carson has made two unbelievable saves and the second one is as good as you’ll see anywhere for a long period of time.”

The club’s in-house commentators were equally effusive with head of media Ryan Daley describing it as “arguably one of the best saves I’ve ever seen”.

“That was absolutely unbelievable from Carson,” he said. “The ball was essentially behind him and he’s got the strength in his arm to get the ball over the crossbar. Unbelievable save.”

Carson, who joined Morecambe on loan from Dundee United in January, joked afterwards that he planned to head home and watch the save over a cuppa.

The seven-times capped international keeper said: “As the manager likes to remind me after the game, that is what I am paid to do! It was just instinct.

“I haven’t been able to watch it [the save] back yet, but by all accounts it was a good save, I will watch it back tonight with a cup of tea.

“It was nice to make it in-front of our supporters as well.. it was great to have that appreciation from them behind me. It was also a massive three points.”
