NI comedians to take on Manchester United legends in charity football match for mental health support

Swapping their boxing gloves for football boots, a number of the biggest names in Northern Irish comedy are set to take on footballing legends for a North Belfast charity.

Manchester United legends are set to touch down in Belfast on Saturday, June 24 to take place in the 'match for mental health' at Solitude in North Belfast.

Organised by TAMHI (Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues), a charity that works with sports clubs and groups to raise awareness of mental health and resilience, the fundraising event will also see the United legends playing a showcase against a Cliftonville/Crusaders select.

The comedians set to compete for a good cause are Shane Todd, Ciaran Bartlett, William Thompson, Aaron Butler, Johnny Bow and Darren Matthews.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Mickey Meehan, from TAMHI explained that seeing the support from the comedy industry after the success of the PIPs charity boxing event last month was "amazing".

Mickey said: "We contacted our friend William Thompson a few months about getting some of the guys involved - William has done things before for us so it would be our pleasure to have all the lads involved.

"So far he has gotten Shane Todd, Ciaran Bartlett, Aaron Butler, Darren Matthews and Johnny ow all playing alongside himself.

"It's amazing to see the lads go out of their way to support such a cause and highlight that they care as it was just few weeks ago they were involved in a boxing event for our friends at PIPS.

"It will be a real positive day for Belfast which has the worst stats for mental health in the UK."

There will then be an evening event at The Lansdowne Hotel which has supported TAMHI in bringing the players to Belfast and has provided accommodation and their function room for free.

Talking previously about the event, Mickey said: "The mascots themselves will be local people who have been affected by suicide. It''ll be free for them to go in and watch.

"Bringing United legends to North Belfast has never been done like this and we are working through Legends XI, based in Belfast.

"To anyone thinking of coming, we just want to say come along. It will be a fantastic event, full of positivity, and good craic as well. We are really looking forward to it."
