NFL Trade Deadline: Looking at 5 landing spots for a potential Derek Barnett deal

The Eagles are expected to be buyers at the NFL trade deadline, but they won’t turn down assets for defensive end Derek Barnett, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

My understanding is the Eagles are open to deal edge rusher Derek Barnett, who could be a decent addition to someone’s defensive end rotation.

Of course, Philly GM Howie Roseman could also keep buying after landing Titans safety Kevin Byard this week. A big swing (Surtain?) is possible, as is the idea that Philly could add an off-ball linebacker such as a Jewell or Hicks (who happens to be a former Eagle).

Barnett, 27, was a first-round pick by the Eagles in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he’s been solid, logging 21.5 sacks over his seven-year career.

Moving Barnett would allow rookie pass rusher Nolan Smith to see more reps on the edge.

At the same time, he could certainly remain in Philadelphia, as GM Howie Roseman covets deep depth at the edge rusher position.

With the rumors heating up, we’re looking at five potential landing spots for the Eagles.

Maxx Crosby is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL, but the loss of Chandler Jones has left a major void in the unit.

With Josh McDaniel on the hot seat, Barnett could be a welcomed addition because of his talent and toughness.

The Bears are rebuilding, but could be the perfect fit for the 27 year old pass rusher.

Barnett is entering the final “real” year of his contract (2024 is a void year), but the Bears have the cap space to sign the defensive end to a long-term deal if he plays well down the stretch.

Bengals

The Bengals rank ninth in pressure rate at 25.4%, but only Trey Hendrickson has more than three sacks.

Barnett is stout against the run and could be renjuevnated by a change of scenery.

Ravens

The Ravens added Jadeveon Clowney, and Kyle Van Noy, but Baltimore could still look to add another option.

The AFC is filled with elite passers and John Harbaugh and Eric DeCosta could look to stock up on pass rushers.

Odafe Oweh is still developing as a pass-rusher and has dealt with injuries, while David Ojabo is working to return from multiple injuries.

Jaguars

Jacksonvill is in the playoff hunt, and they could look to add even more pass rushers ahead of the deadline to add to a group that includes Josh Allen, 2022 No. 1 overall Travon Walker, K’Lavon Chaisson, and former fifth-round rookie Yasir Abdullah.

Doug Pederson drafted Barnett and a reunion could be in the cards.
