Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill showed off his exceptional speed as he surged to victory in the men’s 60-meter race at the USA Track and Field Masters Indoor Championships on Saturday.
Wearing a speed suit from his alma mater Coffee High School, Hill surged to victory with a time of 6.70 seconds at the event in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the 29-year-old’s first track event since 2014 when he competed while at Oklahoma State, and he has hardly lost a step.
The receiver is known around the NFL for his electric speed and decided to test himself by entering the USATF Indoor Championships while enjoying his offseason. The former Kansas City Chiefs star sealed a comfortable victory, pipping runner-up Dainen Brass by just over half a second.
Hill wasn’t racing against Olympic-calibre athletes; Masters events are for athletes aged 25 and older with all levels of ability welcomed. However, the Dolphins ace breezed past his rivals in the 25-29 age bracket, while his result places him 0.36s behind Christian Coleman’s event world record.
Hill was an accomplished track star in high school before turning his attention to pursuing a career in professional football, becoming one of the most prolific receivers of the past decade. During an illustrious track career, he won state titles in the 100m, 200m and long jump in high school and was an All-American in the indoor 200m dash at OSU.
The height of Hill's track career came in 2012, when he won a gold medal as part of Team USA’s 4x100 men's relay team in the World Junior Championships. Hill also won an individual bronze in the 200m.
Following the event on Saturday, Hill appeared to suggest it was a one-off return to track and field. He tweeted: “Never racing again had me out there looking wild” - along with a laughing emoji.
Instead, it appears Hill is focusing on a second season with the Dolphins. After being traded South Beach a year ago, Hill collected eight total touchdowns while setting career highs in receptions (119) and yards (1,710) en route to First-Team All-Pro honours as he struck an instant connection with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Hill, along with a number of other players, even recently restructured his contract to ensure the Dolphins have money to spend in free agency when it begins next week. Hill signed a four-year deal worth $120million following his trade from the Chiefs.
