An NFL rookie who was shot in an attempted car-jacking incident just weeks ago scored the game-winning touchdown for the Washington Commanders over the Chicago Bears in a victory on Thursday night.
Brian Robinson Jr was hospitalised on August 28 following a shooting that saw two gunmen attempt to steal his car outside of a restaurant. The 23-year-old had to undergo immediate surgery for the bullet wound in his leg.
And just six weeks later, the rookie suited up once again for the Commanders and on Thursday night scored the game-winning touchdown to defeat the Chicago Bears in a game that his team would need to win to realistically have a shot at making the play-offs.
Although only his second game since the shooting, Robinson Jr impressed, rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown as he lead the team in carries ahead of established running backs Antonio Gibson and JD McKissic.
Robinson spoke emotionally after the game, thanking his mother after what must have been a traumatising previous two months. He said: "I really wanted to be back around my team. I really wanted to be back around football. I want to tell my mom thank you, I love you. Without you I wouldn’t be here today."
Last night's game was a second consecutive Thursday night match-up which saw both offenses struggling to score points, with now just two touchdowns being scored in the previous two outings in the prime time spot.
Both quarterbacks struggled, with Commanders' Carson Wentz throwing for just 99 yards on 22 attempts, whilst Justin Fields threw for 190 and a touchdown and an interception, but would also rush for 88 yards in the defeat.
The Commanders move to 2-4 with the victory, but remain three wins behind the Philadelphia Eagles who continue with their unbeaten record of 5-0 - facing the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.
The Bears continue to struggle, also with a 2-4 record, with their offense being highly criticised with Fields failing to live up to expectations after being drafted 11th overall in 2021.
