Kansas City Chiefs star wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster scored a touchdown and paid tribute to Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney with his celebration.
It was a surprisingly close-fought game between the AFC leading Chiefs and the lowly Denver Broncos, with Russell Wilson looking back to his Seattle Seahawks form for arguably the first time this season, as he lead his team back from a 21-0 deficit to being just one score behind.
But Patrick Mahomes continued to shine late in the game to seal the win, after a number of highlight throws in a win which puts the Chiefs back in contention for the all-important number one seed, which will give them a bye from the first round of the playoffs.
In the third quarter with the Broncos having the momentum and being one score down, Mahomes scrambled and found Smith-Schuster for a touchdown.
The star wideout celebrated by referencing Rooney's 2015 celebration, throwing punches before falling to the ground acting like he'd been knocked out. This stemming from an infamous video which had been leaked showed former Premier League defender Phil Bardsley knocking Rooney out in his kitchen when the two sparred with boxing gloves on.
The video was shared across social media and on every front page in UK newspapers, with Rooney scoring just days later against Tottenham before mimicking the incident after his goal.
After scoring his touchdown on Sunday, Smith-Schuster, who must have had it planned, mimicked the celebration perfectly.
He would tweet after the game, saying: "Hitting the @WayneRooney. Tag him." Rooney responded, with a laughing face and close-fist emoji, seemingly enjoying the celebration dedicated to him.
It was a win which put the Chiefs back on track, as they look to close out an impressive season with the top seed. They bounced back after a loss to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, who also defeated them in last year's playoffs.
For the Broncos, it was a much better performance despite the loss, and a positive which they can take from what has been a disastrous season for them.
They currently have the second worst record in the NFL, which obviously disappointing, would bring huge rewards for them in just a few months with the second overall draft pick coming their way.
However, they will not be able to use that pick, after trading it, along with their second round pick and three selections last year to the Seattle Seahawks for Wilson.
Wilson has hugely struggled in Denver, meanwhile the Seahawks had been able to draft Charles Cross, Boye Mafe and Tariq Woolen - three impact starters with the latter potentially winning defensive rookie of the year, whilst also potentially a number two overall selection from the Broncos from this year.
