NFL star JJ Watt has revealed that he had to have his heart 'shocked back into rhythm' in last week, and would go on to play just days later.
The three-time defensive player of the year announced the news in a tweet prior to the Arizona Cardinals game against the Carolina Panthers, which the former would go on to win 26-16 as Watt played a big part in the victory. Just days earlier though, he was in hospital when fears of heart issues arose.
Watt tweeted: "I was just told somebody leaked some personal information about me and it’s going to be reported on today. I went into A-Fib on Wednesday, had my heart shocked back into rhythm on Thursday and I’m playing today."
According to the CDC, Atrial fibrillation - commonly called 'A-Fib' or AF - is 'when the heart beats too slowly, too fast, or in an irregular way'. It can lead to blood clots in the heart, causing serious health implications. It can occur as a one-off episode or as a permanent condition - with Watt not stating the nature of his.
Later in the day reporter Jay Glazer had said that Watt had felt off on Wednesday and went to the hospital the next day to get his heart "shocked back in."
The legendary pass-rusher did not practice earlier in the week, however, he was listed as having a 'calf injury'. Just three days later, Watt was able to suit up and recorded three tackles in the win over Baker Mayfield's Panthers.
Watt is now in his second season with the Cardinals, after leaving the Houston Texans after 10 seasons - five of which saw him register over 10 sacks.
The 33-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent years, but already has two sacks this season and remains one of the better defensive linemen in the league.
Watt is in his last season with the Cardinals, and will become a free agent at the end of the campaign.
