The NFL officially solidified a couple of important financial matters for all 32 teams on Monday.
First, the league established the salary cap for all teams. The figure is set at $208.2 million for 2022. That’s up from the $182.5 million salary cap in the 2021 season and is in line with what most analysts predicted the number would be.
Because the Detroit Lions are rolling over some unused cap room from 2021, the team’s figure is above the $208.2 million limit. Over The Cap pegs the Lions figure at $217,680,572.
The NFL also revealed the franchise and transition tag values for all positions. While the Lions are not expected to use any tags on pending free agents before Tuesday afternoon’s deadline, the figures could impact what other teams do.
• QB: $29.703 million
• RB: $9.570 million
• WR: $18.419 million
• TE: $10.931 million
• OL (no differentiation between T, G or C): $16.662 million
• DE: $17.859 million
• DT: $17.396 million
• LB: $18.702 million
• CB: $17.287 million
• S: $12.911 million
• Specialists: $5.22 million
For the Lions, using the franchise tag on safety Tracy Walker would cost them $12.911 million for one season. That’s considerably higher than his expected market value.
