December 28 is the 66th anniversary of “The Greatest Game Ever Played” — a 23-17 overtime victory for the Baltimore Colts over the New York Giants in the 1958 NFL Championship Game at Yankee Stadium.
Perhaps not-so-coincidentally, the Giants will host the now-Indianapolis Colts on that very weekend and the game was left open to flex possibility.
Three of the Week 17 games will be played on that Saturday, the 28th, but Giants-Colts will not be one of them.
With the Giants at 2-12 and tied for last in the league (Las Vegas Raiders), the NFL has opted against flexing New York into the Saturday slot to celebrate said anniversary.
Instead, the Giants will host the Colts at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Had things been different, perhaps the NFL would have leaned into the Giants-Colts anniversary but with the Giants 0-8 at home and fans flying protest banners over the stadium, they thought better of it.
With a loss, the Giants would become the first team in history to lose nine home games in a single season. It would also be just the second time in franchise history the team went winless at home.
