The Jacksonville Jaguars had the chance to take over the No. 1 seed in the AFC on Monday night. Instead, a disastrous night that included an injury for Trevor Lawrence, ended as a 34-31 overtime loss for the Jaguars.
After picking up their fourth loss of the year, all of which have come at EverBank Stadium, the Jaguars are still first place in the AFC South. But their grasp of the division lead, which looked incredibly secure a week ago, is suddenly much more tenuous.
With five weeks of regular season action left, here’s the status of the AFC playoff race:
- Miami Dolphins: 9-3
- Baltimore Ravens: 9-3
- Kansas City Chiefs: 8-4
- Jacksonville Jaguars: 8-4
- Pittsburgh Steelers: 7-5
- Cleveland Browns: 7-5
- Indianapolis Colts: 7-5
Outside looking in:
- Houston Texans: 7-5
- Denver Broncos: 6-6
- Cincinnati Bengals: 6-6
- Buffalo Bills: 6-6
The Dolphins are ahead of the Ravens for now because their 6-2 record in conference play is better than Baltimore’s 6-3. The Chiefs are ahead of the Jaguars due to their Week 2 win in Jacksonville.
While Jacksonville’s lead over the Texans and Colts is down to one game, the Jaguars have a season sweep of the Colts and own the division record tiebreaker over both squads. Still, things are less comfy for Jacksonville after a rough Monday night.
