According to a report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, quarterback Geno Smith will be back with the Seattle Seahawks for the 2023 season. This meshes with what head coach Pete Carroll has said publicly, telling reporters earlier this week that Geno had “better be back.”
Obviously, no official deal has been struck. In any case, whether the team re-signs Smith or in the unlikely event of using the franchise tag on him, bringing Geno back for another season does not and should not preclude them from drafting a quarterback.
Armed with the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider are in position to pick one of the top QB prospects in this class if they want one.
The new league year begins on March 15. If the Seahawks haven’t signed Smith by then, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
