Aaron Rodgers could land his iconic no.12 jersey if he the joins New York Jets, with NFL legend Joe Namath willing to unretire his number if the Green Bay Packers quarterback trades.
Rodgers has been heavily linked with a move to the Jets recently despite still having two years left on his deal with the Packers, but NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports it is a "real possibility". According to Peter King, the Packers would want two first-round picks for Rodgers, but that hasn't deterred their interest.
There was one problem, as Namath famously wore the no.12 while at the Jets, and his jersey was initially retired. But in an attempt to see Rodgers sign for his former team, he's happy to bring it out of retirement for the Super Bowl winner to wear.
When Rodgers claimed that he would go away and consider his future, most people assumed it wouldn't come to anything, and he would start fresh next season at Lambeau Field. Rodgers has made it clear that he still wants to win another MVP award, and still thinks he can perform to the highest level.
The Packers struggled this season, and nothing seemed to go right for them after star-man Davante Adams left for the Las Vegas Raiders. Things didn't go to plan for the Jets either, but there was one clear reason as to why.
The Jets have a stacked roster, but their issues at quarterback ruined their season. Therefore, a deal for Rodgers makes total sense from their perspective, and Namath is willing to help out.
"I hope it can come true, but it’s farfetched,” Namath said about the Rodgers links on WFAN's "Tiki And Tierney" show. "I know (Jets owner) Mr. Johnson is trying to get a quarterback, and if there’s a way he can get Rodgers...
"I'm a big Rodgers fan, and I noticed that he wears number 12, of course. I'm thinking, well, man, if we get him on our side, is he still going to be wearing number 12? Because the number was retired many years ago."
Namath led the Jets to their sole Super Bowl success, and saw his jersey retired in 1985. But he's been told that the decision on allowing Rodgers to wear No. 12 would be up to him, and he's already made up his mind.
"Well, this is what I'm saying, it's on ownership," Namath said. "It's different ownership. It's different people. And I'd sure like Rodgers, if he's there, I want him to wear his number, man.
"We established ourselves and we've got a real respect for our numbers, and Aaron Rodgers, God almighty, yeah! It'd be great to have him in New York."
