Dominoes are beginning to fall in the NFL offseason. The latest move is the Washington Commanders officially cutting embattled quarterback Carson Wentz after one season in our nation’s capital.
It’s been a drastic career slope for a player who was on the precipice of a League MVP award in 2017. After going 2-5 as a starter for the Commanders last season, Wentz will now be looking for his fourth team in as many years, most assuredly as a backup.

Washington moving on from Wentz was hardly a surprising move. It’s now been two consecutive years Wentz has played poorly in a win-or-be-eliminated game, one with Indianapolis last season and one this year against Cleveland.
With Wentz out of the picture, we can now officially add the Commanders as yet another quarterback-needy team, as the only quarterback they currently have is second-year player Sam Howell. Howell started the final game of the season and played admirably in a 26-6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. However, it’s hard to imagine Washington won’t want to add to the quarterback room for competition.
Could the Commanders try to make a run at Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith? Washington has a solid roster, and their owner, Daniel Snyder, could be desperate to make a splash signing in a last ditch effort to make a competitive team before he likely sells the franchise.
Although Smith to the Commanders seems unlikely, add Washington to the list – alongside the Buccaneers – as a potential option in free agency for Smith.
