The New England Patriots put an end to the Mac Jones era on Sunday, trading the quarterback to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a sixth-round pick, per a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Patriots selected Jones, a former Alabama star, with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL draft with hopes that he would become their next franchise QB. Instead, he struggled the past two years after a decent rookie season and now presumably will back up Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.
The Patriots announced the news in an awkward tweet Sunday. One of the team’s in-house reporters wrote a story citing Schefter’s report, and the headline of that story was used as the tweet.
