The NFL is contemplating expanding replay assist to cover facemask penalties and other crucial plays following several missed calls by officials this season. The league's executive expressed concern over the frequency of overlooked facemask penalties, citing instances where such infractions impacted game outcomes. The proposal aims to leverage technology to enhance officiating accuracy and address significant missed calls.
Aside from facemask penalties, the NFL is also evaluating the inclusion of hits on defenseless players, tripping, fair catches, illegal batted balls, illegal double-team blocks, illegal formations on kickoffs, and taunting for potential replay assistance. The current rules restrict replay assist to correcting flag errors or enforcing fouls correctly called on the field.
