Pete Carroll on Seahawks’ Geno Smith-vs-Drew Lock QB competition: “Geno is still ahead, you can tell that.” Says Lock is going to catch up familiarity and system-wise during training camp. @thenewstribune pic.twitter.com/Gps6RPBoNi

Geno Smith is currently winning the Seahawks’ quarterback competition. He’s ahead of Drew Lock, who Seattle acquired in the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos.
Neither Smith nor Lock look to be Super Bowl-caliber quarterbacks, and they’re both certainly worse than Wilson, who dominated the 49ers during his decade in the Pacific Northwest.
It makes sense that Smith would be ahead after minicamp because of his familiarity with the offense, but it’s not a slam dunk that Lock winds up beating him out in camp.
Lock went 8-13 in 21 starts with the Broncos, including a 4-12 record in the last two years. He completed just 59.3 percent of his throws with 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
Smith hasn’t been much better with a 13-21 record in 34 career starts. He did have his best production as a pro last year though in four games with the Seahawks. He completed 69 percent of his throws for 702 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions while averaging 7.4 yards per attempt.
Perhaps Seattle gets into the trade market and aims to acquire Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo. If they don’t, they could wind up with one of the NFL’s worst QB situations after rolling out one of the best over the last 10 years. That’s great news for San Francisco as they aim to exact some revenge for years of losing to their NFC West rivals.
